I've recently been tasked with creating working prototypes of HTML5 and CSS3 versions of an existing web user interface built with "traditional" CSS2 techniques.

My goals were to limit requests and cut back on the size and complexity of image sprites used throughout the interface. I made a version in Dabblet comparing the two techniques (done in beautiful candy green).

Of course this baby is compatible with modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari & Opera (plus IE 10). Any browsers that score less than 50% on css3test.com (I'm looking at you IE7,8,9) sadly can't join in the CSS3 fun.

I, like many, had some of my home utilities (cable TV, phone & internet service) wrapped in a bundled package using one service provider. This seemed like a great idea 7 years ago when I opened the account. Over time, however, my monthly bill grew. While some of the increases were due to me adding features and services, others were simple increases in service costs.

I really didn't take a lot of time to shop around in the last few years. I received a number of mailings and ads from other providers for their services but never really considered it. I didn't want to lose the "discount" I was getting from my bundled plan. At the end of the day, however, I was getting less service and being charged more money.

Today starts week 2 of being on the other side of my decision to change things. I now have 3 separate service providers for each previously bundled service and I couldn't be happier. I'm saving around $100 a month. My cable TV service (now provided via satellite) is lightyears ahead of my previous provider. I have a service now that's integrated with my iPhone and iPad giving me much more functionality than I ever imagined. I ported my old landline over to an internet phone service and am using VOIP equipment for home phone service (which has zero recurring payments). I now have total control of my old home phone number. I can route calls to my cell phone and even to my gmail account. I kept my internet service through my original provider. They do provide a nice cable internet for my area, so I'll continue to use their product.

The morale to my story is don't be afraid to drop your current provider and shop around, especially if you have "bundled" services. In my case I'm getting a lot more while paying a lot less.

Here are my current vendors. Very happy with the services they provide in my new setup.

Cable TV provider: DirecTV
Phone service provider: Google Voice with Obihai VOIP adapter
Internet service provider: Insight Communications
